Richard Spell

Michael Schutte is a Dutch-born artist originally from Amsterdam, now based in Qualicum Beach on
Vancouver Island. Growing up near some of the great museums of Amsterdam, he developed an early
fascination with classical painting, atmosphere, light, and the techniques of the Dutch Masters.
Throughout his artistic career, Michael has focused on wildlife, landscape, and narrative painting.

His work is strongly influenced by traditional European techniques, while his current subject matter is deeply
connected to the natural beauty of Vancouver Island. Through paintings of orcas, coastal wolves, herons,
bears, cougars, forests, and Pacific shorelines, he aims to capture the quiet drama, mystery, and emotional
presence of the West Coast.
Michael has a long history as an art instructor in Europe and Canada. He is the Director of the Academy of
Music and Art in Qualicum Beach, where he teaches painting techniques inspired by the Dutch Masters. He
has also created online art courses for international platforms including Udemy and One Education in
London.
He is the creator, host, and director of the Rogers TV series Painting the Island with Michael Schutte, a
program dedicated to painting, storytelling, and the wildlife and landscapes of Vancouver Island.
Michael’s work combines classical technique with a cinematic sense of place, creating paintings that reflect
both his European artistic background and his deep connection to the wild beauty of Vancouver Island.
